Youth Force- Money Group

This summer Youth Force has split up into four groups each focusing on a certain issue: Money, Crime, Violnce and Drugs. The money group in particular focused on the issues of lack of money and the need for it. They felt that they could address the issue by helping people obtain jobs. So as a group they sat together and came up with the idea of a job fair. Next they reached out to as many companies and organizations they could to participate in the fair. Then they secured a location and date to hold the job fair on. The best place was where the Youth Force works, Dorchester Bay EDC and to hold it on August 9th. Finally they started thinking about the promotional aspects and what ways to get it out there. As a result the group created a flyer and began passing them out around the community. Now the group is waiting to hold the job fair and see what the outcome is.

Summer Youth Force-Violence Group

The first thing the Violence Group did was research how much gang violence was going on. We came up with the idea to meet with Reverend Brown who is a big influence in our community. He also is someone who works with different groups of teens to help squash conflict between them. We wanted to meet with him because of this. In the meeting, he explained why he started working with the different teen groups in the first place. His reasoning was because a boy had got shot eleven times in Academy Park and was in the hospital for 2 months. During this time his father was talking to the Rev. and was saying how he was scared for his son's life. To him it was the breaking point that the violence needed to stop. So the Reverend had came up with an idea to meet with both H-Block (the group of teens that were responsible for the shooting,) and Academy. This was the first meeting he ever did. After talking with him we were inspired to attempt to end all the unnecessary violence. So as a result, we contacted Helen Suarez the head of the Dorchester Bay Summer Camp in order to discuss some plans. Our plans were to spend the last day of the camp with the kids and hold violence classes. This is what the violence group has done so far.

Summer Youth Force- Drug Prevention Group

In the drug group we came up with many ideas to prevent older and younger people from doing drugs. Also we talked about how it brings about negativity in your life. After finding research about the effects of drugs we made skits to try and reach out to young teens. As a group we have come up with various ideas to inform more than one audience meaning kids, adolescents, and adults. We have contacted local rehab centers to see the success of patients getting clean. Our goal as a group is to inform all people in our community about being and staying free.

Boston Police Districts

Here are the Police districts within the City of Boston broken down:

  • A-1 Downtown, Beacon Hill, Chinatown, Charlestown

  • A-7 East Boston

  • B-2 Roxbury, Mission Hill

  • B-3 Mattapan, North Dorchester

  • C-6 South Boston

  • C-11 Dorchester

  • D-4 Back Bay, South end, Fenway

  • D-14 Allston, Brighton

  • E-5 West Roxbury, Rosindale

  • E-13 Jamaica Plain

  • E-18 Hyde Park
Although there are many districts within the City of Boston, Youth Force is mainly
focused on B-2, B-3, and C-11. In other words Roxbury, Mattapan and Dorchester. These districts are our main focus because these places are where every race and every gender are affected in some way.

Boston Crime Stats I - Robbery & Assault

After studying the statistics for Robbery & Attempted as well as for Aggravated Assaults in Boston from January 1 to July 1 in both 2006 and 2007, it seems that these serious crimes are going down. Robberies and Attempted citywide went down from 1,297 to 1,141, a decrease of 12%. This decrease was also experienced in areas B-2, B-3, and C-11. For Aggrivated Assault, the amount citywide decreased from 2,248 to 2,041, a 10% drop. This was also seen by the neighborhoods that we studied. However, these neighborhoods are the top three areas for aggravated assaults in the city. B-2 and C-11 are the first and second respectively for the city of Boston in these crimes.

One of the Youth Force members was grazed by a bullet in an attempted robbery. He doesn't think that the robberies are going down. When we talked about it, one of the issues that leads to robberies is poverty. The issue of jealousy also came up. Edouine said that many people are just haters, jealous of what you have. Gio pointed out people may just be mad and take it out on the first person that they see with jewelry. Leah pointed out that she used to see people get robbed three times a day, but now she hears more about people getting shot and killed.

We think that there should be less of these crimes. Youth Force members came up with an idea to try and stop Attempted Robbery and Aggervated Assaults. The idea was to have more police patrolling at night because during the day there are a lot of officers driving around and riding bikes But when night time falls, you barely see any cops, and thats when the most crime happens.

Introduction

Welcome to the Dorchester Bay Youth Force blog page. Youth Force is a group of teens that are striving to change the community. This summer we passed out surveys and came up with these three issues affecting the community today: Crime, Drugs and Money. This blog will be focused on these issues that are important to the community.
Our first posting will be on crime. A few of our Youth Force members have researched the crime rates from within Boston areas. The information was derived from bpdnews.com Over time we will continue to update our blog with all kinds of info ranging from drug facts, more crime rates and even events that we're hosting. All in all we're hoping that our blog will make people aware of what is going on in our community and maybe influence others to help so that they too can strive to make a difference.
